My work - Dinnerware - Evidence
My original Evidence series has evolved into a series cups and bowls of very thin handbuilt, ripped and reworked porcelain remnants. The vessels are raw in form. The outside surfaces are usually unglazed and conjure up ideas of the disgarded. The patterns and impressions on each piece evoke ideas of wood, organic matter, decomposition, and also evidence of man: of roads, ruins, canals, lace, partial conversations, wrinkled, dirty, disgarded journal writings and letters, rudimentary drawings and maps. They are seen and then disappear throughout the piece, showing impermanence and the calm within that. Hopefully it also gives rise to sense of timelessness.
I work on the floor, with a rolling pin, a creamy white porcelain and whatever textures I collect while on my daily walks and bike rides through Amsterdam. I feel that this working style and this particular city have a deep influence on my work.
The life of the piece becomes complete when it is used. Each piece is fired twice (to 900C, and 1250C) making it durable for everyday use.
