Colored Porcelain

Picture
A new collection of thin, colored porcelain, high fired pieces.  The clays are colored by me, in my studio in small batches and vary. I start with a smooth white porcelain and add colorants, oxides and stains. I enjoy the rich variety and unpredictability of the colors .  I do it by feel rather than strict measurements and like the idea that once a batch is gone, it is gone.

A thin translucent glaze is draped on the inside of each piece.  The outside is left unglazed to emphasize the clay itself, to let the clay speak for itself.
By taking a simple, instantly recognizable form and making it from an unexpected luxurious coloured porcelain, she creates something that is at once comfortable and approachable  yet delicate and refined.  It is modern and minimalist yet obviously handmade porcelain.  She leaves the mark of the maker and a transparancy in the integrity of the process.  She does not conceal this process, rather, it is emphasized. When one sees or holds a piece, it is clear just how it was made and that it was made by a person.  And that is the point.
