Through my ART...
The Ephemeral becomes Tangible ... Thought becomes form.
I love when I have made something that speaks to another person and find that the experience of making something I perceive as beautiful is most important, but when it can transcend that singular experience and communicate with you, that’s when the piece is truly successful.
Islands, landscapes, and sea created from porcelain, stoneware, sand, ... Imagination, memory and materials combine to create a new world.
Recent Inspiration: A little tower of Professor Arnold Chin's Wooden Box, 17th Century Kangxi (Jingdezhen) cosmetic box from recently discovered Dutch shipwreck, 3 Tea bowls inspired by The Tang Dynasty Treasure (Beilitung Shipwreck) c.890. There are so many stories nestled safely in these boxes... They are waiting to be told...

I have been working with porcelain and stoneware for over 15 years. Most recently, I have been designing and creating hand mixed and tinted colored porcelain functionalware, one of a kind 3D wall “bricks”, and custom dinnerware collections. All pieces are fired twice, a bisque fire to 900 C, then again, to 1250 C; making them very durable. All functional pieces are truly functional and meant to be used daily (foodsafe, dishwasher, microwave safe).
Using handbuilt porcelain as a pliable, 3 dimensional canvas, I tell my stories. Inscising, sgrafitto, colored slips and sometimes text are used along with transparent and opaque vibrantly colored glazes to create a world that is based on reality but not nececessarily truth or accuracy in the traditional sense. Consciously rejecting ideas of proper perspective, proportion and realism, I tell a partial story that is ambiguous and conducive to multiple interpretations. I like that the images and textures are part of the piece, not simply on top of it and that they can be felt with your fingers. Please see examples of my work using the menu on the left, at the top of the page.
